Park's appendicitis following the fall came out of nowhere, though. The writers were trying to up the ante, but it didn't quite work. It felt too contrived, even if Morgan showed how she feels about him by begging Glassman to prioritize his surgery.
While I enjoyed some of the episode's more human moments---Hvitserk's defiance of his infuriating brother, Ivar, for instance---there were still far too many of the show's worst habits on display, such as:
As you can tell, I'm still incredibly frustrated by this show and its many continued failings. The quality has dropped so dramatically. Still, it was a better episode than the last couple. Two episodes back we had to watch a bishop kill another bishop in a cathedral while his perfect hair was spattered with blood. That was a new low as far as I'm concerned. Last week was better (I missed it and forgot to write a review, please forgive me) though it was also when Ivar proclaimed himself a god and only Hvitserk seemed to care or do anything about it.
At this point, more than anything, I'm just bored with this show. The return of Magnus is more of an annoyance than a big "oooh wow" moment. The constant bickering between brothers has grown stale. Floki's plot is a snoozer. Lagertha has been all but wasted in this stupid relationship with Heahmund. Heahmund is ridiculous, from his absurd way of speaking to his absurdly modern haircut.
The one plot that ought to be interesting, as Aethelred plots (badly) against his half-brother Alfred, is only mildly so since we know the plot won't work, since we care so little about the various players involved. The show hasn't earned this skullduggery. We're just supposed to think that all these men would so easily and quickly plot the overthrow and murder of their king and that I guess Alfred's best defenders are a group of unruly norsemen? Oh come on.
I guess Ubbe and Torvi are Christians now. So that's something. I still don't quite understand why we aren't watching the story of the conquest of England by the brothers of Ragnar, with Ubbe and Ivar working side by side against a common foe, but I suppose I should just stop wanting even the slightest whiff of historical accuracy from this show.
I mean, that was the big cliffhanger last week---we all thought it would be Hvitserk, except for the fact that if it were Hvitserk why didn't they show us? So we actually knew it would be someone else. We just never guessed it would be this terrifically stupid. Ivar, lately, has been stupid more than he's been clever, and lucky more than anything. Why anyone follows him is a mystery. Why only now Hvitserk is pouting and acting like a wounded pet is also a mystery---he'd seen all his brother's atrocities. He was fine with Ivar killing Ubbe and Bjorn and that other brother that totally had it coming, but he's upset about the crazy Margrethe? Sure thing, Vikings. That all makes perfect sense.
It's like we're watching the shadow of another show. This is, perhaps, Rollo's psyche turned into a live-action viking drama, living forever in the great silhouette cast by what this show used to be, back when it was about Ragnar Lothbrok rathar than his ridiculous children.
I write about TV shows like House Of The Dragon, The Witcher, The Rings Of Power, Stranger Things, Yellowjackets, Severance and many others. I also cover movies, video games, comic books and novels, largely in the fantasy, science-fiction, horror and superhero genres. Some of my favorite video games to play and write about include Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Call Of Duty, XCOM, Mass Effect, Titanfall, The Witcher and many other action, RPG and shooter games. My favorite films include Braveheart, Tropic Thunder, Arsenic and Old Lace, Schindler's List and far too many others to list here. I often discuss the \"pop culture wars\" and how shifting cultural values impact our art and entertainment. I prefer deep conversations and debate to shouting matches, and welcome readers from all walks of life and all religious and political backgrounds to join in this conversation. Thanks for reading!
In the apartment, Sheldon is working on his new web-based show, Sheldon Cooper Presents: Fun with Flags. Sheldon does an introduction by saying that for the next 52 weeks, he and the viewers will explore vexillology. Amy enters and sits next to him on the couch, asking him what vexillology is. He answers that it's the study of flags. Amy acts excited and comments that she learned something already and indicates that she is having fun. Sheldon continues by saying that fun and information are the two sides to the show, and compares it to his first flag factoid, the Oregon flag, which happens to be the only two-sided state flag. He continues by adding that the show will cover questions such as what is the only non-rectangular flag, what is the animal that appears most on flags, what animal appears second-most-often on flags, and many more. Amy then grabs a white flag and starts waving it wildly and says "Sweet!" Sheldon plays along by asking her why she waved the flag and she says she is surrendering to fun. They laugh and Sheldon looks into the camera and claims the current episode will not be fun at all. He says that the viewers have to know how to hold and fold flags and proceeds to explain. Suddenly, Leonard walks past the camera, disrupting the show's recording. Sheldon yells "cut" and asked Leonard whether he was oblivious to the fact that he was shooting his show. Leonard apologizes and says he needs to get out of the apartment since he is having dinner with Penny. Sheldon retorts that he has facts about flags that he needs to get out from his head. Leonard gives him a look before leaving without saying a word. Once he leaves, Amy asks Sheldon whether he is okay. He says he isn't and he is rattled, but proceeds to re-shoot again. He does his introduction again and when Amy's part with the white flag comes, it turns out that she drew a face on the flag. He asks her why she did it and she says the gesture will make the show more appealing for younger viewers. Sheldon thinks it's a brilliant idea and makes them start again from the top.
At Sheldon and Raj's office, Sheldon is researching new facts about flags for the next episode of his show. He shares about how the same flags shared by Flag of Liechtenstein and Flag of Haiti were coincidental since both parties were oblivious to the fact until the 1936 Summer Olympics. Then, Howard enters and starts asking about Raj's new iPhone he bought on the way to work. Raj asks whether he would like to peel off the plastic and Howard can't believe it since that is the best part. Raj tells him to hold a corner and they peel off the plastic together, both very happy. Raj calls Howard "cowboy" and tells him to do it slowly and savor the moment. Once done, Sheldon tells them that since Raj mentioned cowboys, what flag has two cows on it and answers Flag of Andorra. He is ecstatic and says the next episode of his show is writing itself. Howard then tells Raj he wants to try his new phone's voice recognition, but Raj tells him not to be greedy since he already peeled off the plastic, and instead tries it himself. He begins interacting with Siri (the phone's voice recognition and AI software), quickly growing fond of it. He asks it out for a cup of coffee and Siri responds with several nearby coffee shops. Raj tells them he will see them later and walks out of the office. Howard darkly responds that Siri will break Raj's heart. 041b061a72
