What is Hong Kong Mahjong?

Hong Kong mahjong is a variant of the classic Chinese game of mahjong, which involves four players who try to form sets of tiles and score points. The game is similar to the card game rummy, but it uses tiles instead of cards, and it has more complex scoring and rules. Hong Kong mahjong is one of the most popular versions of mahjong in the world, and it has some distinctive features that make it different from other variants.

The origin and history of mahjong

Mahjong originated in China during the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), and it was probably based on earlier card games that used paper money as cards. The game spread throughout China and other parts of Asia, where it evolved into different regional variations. Mahjong was also introduced to the West by Chinese immigrants and travelers, who brought the game to Europe and America in the early 20th century.

One of the earliest places to adopt mahjong as a popular pastime was Hong Kong, where it became a part of the local culture and entertainment. Hong Kong style mahjong adapted native rules from the cities and New Territories, creating a unique version of the game that is still widely played today. Hong Kong mahjong also influenced other variants of mahjong, such as American mahjong and Japanese riichi mahjong.

The tiles and suits of mahjong

A standard Hong Kong mahjong set consists of 144 tiles, which are divided into five suits: three numbered suits (bamboo, dots, and characters), and two honor suits (winds and dragons). Each suit has nine tiles with ranks from one to nine, except for the winds (east, south, west, north) and the dragons (red, green, white), which have no ranks. There are four identical copies of each tile in the set.

In addition to the five suits, there are also eight optional tiles: four flower tiles (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo) and four season tiles (spring, summer, autumn, winter). These tiles have no duplicates, and they give extra bonuses to the player who draws them. However, they are not always used in every game, so you should check with your opponents before playing with them.

The basic rules and gameplay of mahjong

The goal of Hong Kong mahjong is to build a complete winning hand of 14 tiles. In general, this is formed from four sets of three tiles (called melds) and a single pair (called eyes). A meld can be either a sequence of three consecutive tiles in the same suit (called a chow), or a triplet of three identical tiles in any suit ( called a pung), or a quadruplet of four identical tiles in any suit (called a kong). A pair is simply two identical tiles in any suit.

The game begins with each player randomly drawing 13 tiles from the wall (the remaining tiles that are not dealt). The player who draws the first tile is the dealer (also called the east wind), and the turn order follows the wind direction (east, south, west, north). The dealer starts the game by discarding one tile from their hand, placing it face up in the center of the table. Then, the next player in turn can either pick up the discarded tile or draw a new tile from the wall. If they pick up the discarded tile, they must use it to form a meld and expose it on their rack. If they draw a new tile, they can either keep it or discard it. The game continues in this way until one player declares a win by completing their hand, or until the wall runs out of tiles and the game ends in a draw.
